Mungo National Park - Day 1

Mungo National Park is located in the far south west corner of New South Wales in Australia, 800km from Melbourne and is a sacred Aboriginal site. We decided to take advantage of a 3 day weekend and drive up for a quick adventure in the lead up to our epic Californian road trip (Stay tuned for that one!)

Early-ish Saturday morning (7am) Sarah packed our lunches and Ruth went over her list one more time. We put a few more things in the car, made a final adjustment to the GoPro (forgetting to remove the fingerprints from the window!) and we were away, late and lost before too long...

We had packed for 40º but it was cold and foggy when we set off! It was an easy drive to Mildura but the roads got a bit rough after that. There were only a few crazy drivers on the road, one even looked like they were towing a meth lab! and Sarah only had to nap a few times to avoid Ruth’s car sing-a-long… To EVERY SINGLE SONG!!

So after 10hrs of Karaoke, almost 800km, 3 driver swaps, 2 petrol stops, an accidental 45min detour and the unheard warning "Don't look down the drop toilet with your torch!" (both sets eyes have been scarred for life!) We finally made it.

We made a quick stop at ‘The Walls Lookout’ for some photos and met some roos who were keen to get some water.

Then we headed on to ‘Belah Campsite’ to set up our tent before dark. The campsite was basic but all we needed for now. Plenty of clearings for tents, picnic tables, a drop toilet, and a tank of water (not suitable for drinking, but great for head dunking when the temperature reached far beyond what we were hoping for!)

After some dinner, which consisted of peanut butter rolls on the run we took a drive to ‘Vigars Well’ taking extra care of the roos, rabbits, and foxes - only once mistaken for a dingo before we put on our tracker eyes!

There we had a go at night photography. We spent a good hour or two of trial and error having a bit of fun painting with light on some very reflective dunes before packing it in for the night.
